Seven terrorists have been apprehended, and 15 hostages have been freed, thanks to the efforts of the police in Zamfara State.
By the time they were freed on Monday, the victims had been held captive for 50 days.
While parading the suspects before journalists in Gusau on Thursday evening, Yusuf Kolo, the state commissioner of police, vowed that his command would not give up on its objective to restore peace in the state.
The command’s spokesperson, Mohammed Shehu, told NewsXtra that the six detained individuals were “involved in a criminal conspiracy, intimidation, and extortion.”
A total of N700,000 was found and returned. Mr Shehu explained that the funds came from fees imposed on residents of various Anka local government area communities.
Mr Shehu also reported the arrest of a female “gun runner” who specialises in providing weapons and ammo to terrorists in the state.
“The female suspect is a notorious gunrunner specialising in transporting Arms and Ammunition to a notorious bandit kingpin known as Dawa.
“The said bandit kingpin has been a notorious bandit leader terrorising the innocent people of Zamfara and neighbouring states. The suspect confessed to her involvement in the crime. The investigation is in progress,” he said.
Mr Shehu reported that a police tactical unit rescued the kidnapped individuals after receiving intelligence about their whereabouts.
“Police Tactical Operatives in collaboration with Vigilante acted on intelligence information regarding the abduction of 15 victims by bandits terrorist at Dike village in Funtua LGA of Katsina State.
“The Police operatives, on receiving the intelligence information, mobilised to the location and conducted a search and rescue operation at Sabon Garin Dustin Kaura forest in Danjibga district of Tsafe LGA.
“The rescue operation was successfully conducted, leading to the rescue of the victims hale and hearty,” the statement added.
Mr Shehu stated that the victims were transported to a hospital for medical examination and debriefing by police investigators before being released to their families.
There have been renewed terrorist attacks in Zamfara, as well as many other states in the North-west and a portion of the North-central, resulting in the deaths and displacement of hundreds of people.
